October Art Show

I can’t believe it is October already!! The leaves have turned and are mostly on the ground now. The kids are back in school, and life has returned to some sort of normalcy. I spent 2 weeks in Greece in early June and had the time of my life. What a beautiful country! So full of history and culture. Needless to say I was inspired, both by my colleagues, the historic ruins, as well as the countryside. Have been home busily painting. Check out my new art and remember “Calgary Community Painters Society” art show and sale will be taking place on Saturday October 24th at the Triwood Community Centre in NW Calgary starting at 10 am. If you are in the art market or just want to spend a few hours and enjoy browsing come, look and enjoy a coffee and a goodie on us.

Have a wonderful day!

A Day at the Lake

A-day-at-the-lake

I was recently asked to do a commissioned painting. What an honor that is to an artist. You know your work has been noticed and admired enough to have that privilege, but at the same time it is a double edged sword. My client is a wonderful person who had definite ideas about what he wanted to portray, but really had no picture in mind. After several conversations, I realized what was important to him and what he wanted represented. He is a family man and a devoted husband and father who loves the outdoors. Mountains and water are very much a part of his life, as are family values and activities. This gave me some ideas of what I had to incorporate in his painting. Fortunately there wasn’t a tight time line and I was able to mull over ideas and do some basic sketches. Still it was a gamble and I was hoping that through our conversations I had grasped his story and what he wanted represented. While I worked on it, I constantly wondered and worried if I was on the right track. Upon completion, I still had some trepidation. It’s not that easy to get into someone’s head and you never know what the final reaction will be. My policy is, “If you like it, it’s yours, if not it’s mine.” Well….. this particular painting is no longer mine.

My biggest reward was the huge smile on his face as he unwrapped it and almost immediately started to identify and superimpose his family into the canvas before him. That is the ultimate reward for an artist!

Enjoy the day,

It’s showtime!

How time flies! I have been very busy painting. I am working on several commissions and have been accepted into an art gallery in Scottsdale to show my work! It’s a lovely little gallery on Main Street in Old Scottsdale, in the gallery district, called Gallery Andrea. The gallery is also part of the Art Walk which is held every Thursday evening from October to the end of May. If you happen to be enjoying the weather in the Phoenix area, please check it out. In Calgary I continue my involvement with the ‘Calgary Community Painters Society‘. The spring show and sale will be held on April 18, 10am – 4pm at the Triwood Community Hall. I also have some work on display through Artistic Entities at the Fish Creek Library in Calgary. In May I will be traveling to Greece for the trip of a life time with a group of established artists to paint and continue learning. I’m sure I’ll come back with some fabulous new ideas and techniques. This has been a very exciting time for me and I thank my wonderful family and very dear friends for their patience, support and encouragement along this never ending journey.

Enjoy the day!

Latest Commission

I thought I would take a little break from painting nature and work on my latest commission. I never thought I would learn so much about sports by taking up painting!

Latest work

Waking up in the morning to the birds chirping and the sun shining has inspired me to capture how I feel and what I see on canvas. The beauty surrounding me in nature has inspired my latest creations. I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed painting them.

The eye of the beholder

“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder……” We have all heard this old adage. What do you think of when you hear it? A person you have seen? A unique pet? Perhaps a piece of furniture? Just about anything. I never really gave it much thought until I started painting. Recently I was waiting for an appointment and noticed an especially intriguing piece of art on the waiting room wall. It was Impressionism at its best. Its use of texture and color was especially appealing to me. I like to take photos of things I like and so I decided to use my iPhone and it’s many capabilities to remember this particular piece of art. In doing so, I had to excuse myself, as I stepped in front of a gentleman sitting in the chair beside me. I apologized and explained to him what I was doing, as he was obviously wondering why I so rudely stepped in front of him almost ending up sitting on his lap. He looked at the picture for several long seconds, looked at me, and said, “What do you see in that work of art that I don’t see?” An artist takes a risk when producing a piece of work. Some will love it and others, like this gentleman will wonder what is so special about it. People are doing this when they view my art. Yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but an artist must be true to oneself and create what they believe to be an expression of self, not worrying what others may think……

Next time.

My Little Hobby

This has been an exciting several months for me. Little did I know that my interest and love of painting and creating would lead to a full time occupation. I started out by simply wanting to redecorate my house. Everything was dated and the petite point on my walls definitely was indicative of a different era. Since I have always been creative, I decided to do my own paintings. I could choose my own sizes and colors and subject matter. It turned out to be a very successful experiment and soon I had requests for paintings. I went on to decorate my children’s homes and the offices of business acquaintances. I entered contests and had my work displayed in that manner. People began to notice and commissions started to flow in. Wow, what a great feeling! My little hobby has turned into a very busy career. Painting, or learning new techniques, is something I am now doing on a daily basis. I attend workshops and classes as well as produce 1 to 2 paintings a week. Currently I am working on a portfolio entitled ‘Textures of Nature’ which will be submitted to various art galleries. You may find some of these works posted on my website under the New Work category.

I have also been fortunate enough to be accepted into a local art group in Calgary that is called “The Calgary Community Painters Society.” Besides promoting learning and sharing of ideas and techniques, they have at least 2 art shows and sales a year, the next one being the last weekend of October at the Triwood Community Hall in Calgary. I will be selling several painting here. Details will be posted as the date draws nearer.

Yes, this has been a busy and interesting few months and I look forward to continuing my postings. For now, enjoy the summer and take some time to look around and enjoy the beauty around you!

Observation

Having been born and raised in Alberta, I have one thing in common with all the other Albertans. When we get summer, we enjoy it to its fullest extent! The slightest bit of sun and everyone is outside walking dogs, jogging, playing with toddlers, or otherwise enjoying nature and so I find myself amongst them. I enjoy walking the many paths and parks that are found here. What a kaleidoscope for artists of landscape! There is so much to see and absorb. I find myself dissecting nature. In looking at trees I am consciously noticing how they grow. Are they straight, or has nature gnarled and twisted them? Where do the shadows fall at different times of the day? How do the branches grow from the trunk? What is the texture of the bark and on and on….. I find myself selecting and mixing colors in my head for future reference. I look to see how the grass is growing and in which directions the blades fall, again observing and mixing color. Then there is the sky and the flowers and the shrubs. The list is endless. Painting is about really seeing what is around you and being able to commit it to canvas with a personal twist that makes it unique. Perhaps on your next walk you may want to pick one subject and observe it in detail. You may be surprised at what you really see. Have a wonderful day and make some time to enjoy nature with all of her intricacies. Until next time.
